I've a 1990 JD 670 with a single stage clutch. Per the manual, a dual stage clutch (allowing the rear PTO to stay "live") was an option.
Although not a high priority, I am interested if anyone know if the changeover can be made, and at what cost (assuming a dealer does it...figure $25.00/hr rates).

Roy;
It is an interesting question. The short answer is yes it can be done, but what it would take I am not the one to answer that question.
I htink you need to look through the parts and service manuals on the tractor and determine what the extra parts are. The two stage clutch assembly is not that difficult to replace and I doubt the linkage is any different. The main cost for parts and time would be the propeller shaft or input shaft on the transmission. One may be split and the other is not. You would have to dismantle the transmission to replace the shaft.
I have rebuilt tractor transmissions with 2 atage clutches but not that JD. It can be time consuming. I would thing 12-16 hours work.
If you look through the manuals you may determine that the only change is the clutch assembly. For commonality manufactures often have one set of machined parts(prop shaft) and then leave out components for the simpler system.

There's a good chance an extensive modification would be required. On my Ford 1710, the live PTO option is offered on a different TX than the standard PTO. The live PTO is driven from the 2-stage clutch through an input shaft that is not part of the TX. The standard PTO is driven from a TX shaft. So, on my 1710, changing to a live PTO would require a new TX and most likely a new PTO as well. Some other tractors probably have similar designs.

I reaffirmed the importance of live PTO to me yesterday. It was the first time the gravel drive has been frozen solid enough to use the snow blower. I seemed to be 'out of practice.' I clogged the chute twice when stopping the tractor because I didn't run the blower long enough to clear snow out of the blower after stopping. The snow was the salt/sand mixture a highway plow throws across our drive entrance. It is sticky stuff, and it doesn't blow out easily if left sitting in the chute even for a few seconds.

I guess the alternative with a non-live PTO would be to shift to neutral before stopping. A live PTO is just a lot more convenient for snow blowing but even more important for finish mowing, which I don't do with the 1710.

A conversion is not likely to be feasable. Not only will the clutch assembly and probably the flywheel need to be swapped out, the transmission is different. In a transmission-driven (non-live) PTO, the PTO is usually driven off the rear of the transmission's input shaft. A live PTO has a dedicated shaft through the transmission (usually inside a tubular countershaft) driving the PTO. It is entirely possible the transmission housing is cast or machined differently. ....

Thanks for all the answers. It really surprised me that the dual stage is so different then the single stage clutch. Reckon I expected it to just be a clutch, pressure plate, etc. swap (as in a car).
Since this is a gear transmission, I guess the shift to neutral and pause for a few seconds while the implement does it's thing will be the way to go.
Well, it's a nice tractor...have to live with it's limitations.
If you'd like to see a picture of it, click on the "Photos" link on the CBT home page...then the "John Deere 670" link. ....

Most fairly new TX driven PTO’s have built in over-running clutches. I don't know about 670's. Without an over-running clutch, a heavy implement such as a rotary cutter can drive a tractor forward even in neutral and with the brakes on. Inertia from the heavy rotating cutters will still drive the rear wheels when the clutch is disengaged. It's also hard on the PTO clutch. External over-running clutches are available tractors without built in ones. ....

My 670 doesn't move if I put the transmission in neutral and let off the clutch. That's how I've been using it when I've got to back in to an area to cut.
I was hoping (after reading about the dual stage clutch) I could buy the components and keep this under $500.00.
Per most of the response, this ain't gonna happen.

Oh well...shoulda done more investigation before I bought...however, it's a nice machine...I'll live with it's limitations. ....
